On Sunday 1 September 2024, the revised HCPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics, and guidance on social media which sits alongside the standards, come into effect.

These standards set out, in general terms, how we expect our registrants to behave. They outline what the public should expect from their health and care professional, help us make decisions about the character of professionals who apply to our Register and we use them if someone raises a concern about a registrant’s practice.

It is every registrant’s responsibility to make sure they are familiar with the changes to the standards and guidance on social media and continue to meet them. We have worked closely with stakeholders, such as yourself, in both the development of the standards and guidance, and in the promotion of the changes to registrants. We would urge everyone to make sure that their members or colleagues are aware of the updates, and thereby help us embed these revised standards.

We have a range of materials on our website that we would encourage all registrants and stakeholders to take advantage of, including further guidance and videos explaining the changes and why they have been made.

Finally, I would like to thank you, and all those who contributed to the development of these standards in every way, from formally responding to our consultation to asking us the simple questions that often matter the most.

The revisions make the standards clearer and more relevant to current practice. I have no doubt that they will support all our registrants, to conduct themselves with professionalism and pride every day.

Yours sincerely,

Bernie O’Reilly Chief Executive and Registrar The Health and Care Professions Council
