A new research funding call is encouraging applications from disciplines that are less commonly involved in clinical research, presenting a valuable opportunity for UK audiology. Issued by the Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) Programme of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the call aims to strengthen careers in under-represented fields and specialisms.

The call invites proposals of up to £500,000 for projects lasting up to three years, following the RfPB’s funding limits based on the projected patient benefit. It offers flexibility for researchers to explore any relevant subject area within the RfPB’s remit.

Applications must be led by registered health and care professionals (HCPs) who were not eligible for previous RfPB highlight notices targeting under-represented disciplines. Eligible HCPs include clinical scientists, healthcare scientists, non-medical public health practitioners, optometrists, pharmacists, and practitioner psychologists. To support capacity building, applications should be led by an early-career HCP, with mentorship and backing from an experienced, multi-disciplinary team.

All applicants are required to submit an expression of interest by 05 March 2025  before proceeding to Stage 1 application submission.
