BAA Webinar: Deaf Awareness in Healthcare – Turning Principles into Practice

Presenters:
Laura Turton, Head of Audiology, NHS Tayside
Jason Smalley, Head of Audiology, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
The recently published Guiding Principles of Deaf Awareness in Healthcare Settings for Adults from the British Society of Audiology sets out important principles to help healthcare professionals provide more accessible, inclusive care for people who are deaf or have hearing loss. The guidance aims to support good practice across all healthcare settings and improve communication, safety and patient experience.
In this webinar, we will introduce the key principles behind the guidance and explore what they mean in everyday clinical practice. The session will highlight why Deaf awareness matters in healthcare, the barriers people with hearing loss often encounter, and the practical steps services can take to improve accessibility.
We will also share real-world examples of changes clinics can implement, from communication strategies and environmental adjustments to service design approaches that help ensure patients with hearing loss can access care confidently and effectively.
Join us for a practical discussion on how audiology teams and healthcare services can translate guidance into meaningful action.
*This webinar is for BAA members only*
